What does the modern world reward and what does it ignore?
What is wrong? What's the noise all about?Isn't that a mayhem?
What could have caused it?
No one could say. They say it's taking away our values and responsibilities. In fact, they said it's a fluke and it will wear away just like the waves of the sea on the shore. Some said it felt like they're walking on a bed of roses and they feel eased. Isn't this a dilemma? How can one thing be this good and this wrong at the same time?. So what exactly is the bone of contention?
Or should I say we've been eaten deep by our primitive ways and we find it difficult to adapt to what the modern world is bringing to our doors? But what could be ‘modern’? Are you trying to call us old fashioned? No we are not. We are inventors of greatness and there's nothing to compete with our creativity. Of course not. We are original.
Oh then I realize what the fuss is all about. Isn't that what they call 'civilisation'? No, they said they are already in vogue and trending. Well, I'm not disputing their exposure. Then what's this new world and what's the good tidings it's bringing? Finally, it struck a chord, 'It's DIGITALIZATION'. That's the misconception. This isn't a problem, it's just a trend of evolution we are experiencing that has come to stay. We are wrapped in it but we've been too ignorant of it. Is digitalization what the people referred to as the machine that will take away their jobs and replace them? Is this the brain box that is making their youths lose their relevance, stripping them naked of their intellect? I'm surprised authenticity has been lost to the said modern world. Why? It's been known for its goodness. Why then could it be called corrupted? I guess it's an abuse by the way.
It's imperative we break the ice and address the elephant in the room. It's time we understand what this modern world has brought into us and what it ignores and see how much it has shaped our identity.
We are now in a time where the modern world celebrates mediocrity, abandons morality and sidelines wisdom. Youth could no longer boast of what they have impacted with their prime. The hardworking are now the fools who choose to embrace integrity and power. Gone are the days where we bury our heads in research, pile upon sheets, unraveling mystery and tapping into knowledge. Hardly will you see a young adult that can survive a few minutes with their phones. I can't remember the last time the inhabitants of this modern world sat down to hold meaningful conversations that will bring an end to national issues.
The leaders of tomorrow have now become the issue giving the elders sleepless nights. Tamuno no longer breaks kolanut, he now breaks into foreign accounts and dupe people of their life earned savings. And these are the people we celebrate in society. Mothers now take pleasure in comparing their first class son under the scorching sun in Aba with a pack of infidels with no glimpse of the future in Lekki. What a mistake we have made. The modern world rewards only what they can see. It's such a pity that efforts are not recognized.
Modesty has become a shame. Our new system is now open to flesh. All sights have been perforated. All we behold are cleavages. Insecurities with bodies have led us to visit the doctors with knives and fake promises. If only the bodies could speak, I'm certain Becky's hips could have found her rightful owner. The guys couldn't use bands anymore. We call it fashion. Of a note, what's fascinating in you running after your trousers in the public. Well, it's a display we pay less to watch nowadays. Lies are now easily told without detection over devices. The Manager in Abuja can just generate an image of himself in his mother's home in Nnewi. At least, you can never detect the deception on the other side of the phone. Trust has been thrown into caution. That's the world we have found ourselves in. What more have we been robbed of?
Our code of conduct has been punctured. We have ignored the communal living of our fore runners. It's no longer to love and to be cared for. We are so occupied with our new self, we claim to be busy yet unproductive. We now harbour people of questionable sources of income as we claim to mind our business. We call the traditional living system archaic. It's now become the order of the day because affection and hospitality has been misplaced to be an invasion of privacy. A subtle knock of a stranger is returned with a frown in the face of the occupants. This is definitely not what we're known for. There's no longer the gatherings of unity, we're already divided before the fall.
The moral decadence in speech that is now welcome all in the name of Gen-Z is now the new culture. The elderly are now struggling to instill discipline, what the millennials fought for and accepted as guidance and counseling. Good words cannot be bought but ours has been traded for nothing. We are now in a generation that can speak up for their rights yet can't fight tooth and nail for good governance. The rise of nonsensical play is now celebrated for its popularity. But where's the depth? That's the hypocrisy? Our voices have just been silenced when it comes to issues that matter. We can only be heard when we want to trade the remnant of sense in unwanted argument and opinions.
But I beg to differ that the modern world has only come to take from us all that we hold dearly. It's clearly an abuse of the privileges we've been rewarded for. The frivolities we've wasted its relevance on have blinded us to see what the modern world has brought to us. The modern world has definitely showered on us goodness but we fail to acknowledge it.
The modern world has instinctively come as a sweet penance for all the struggles in the past year. It has come to us as a promise made about the future. But the future is now. Not to be looked forward to. It's within our reach. In every area of life, even to the thinnest details of our private life. Do you want to fight it? Of course not. It has come to stay.
Modern education has become an advantage that is leveraged. The poor even solicit for funds to taste it. Exposures taught with inks and sheets within the brown walls of the classroom. Global etiquette on manners and behaviours can't be easily swept under the carpet. Its impacts can't be easily forgotten. It's the mother of all rewards that the modern world has given to us though not on a platter. Or should we dissect the chances of living it has granted unto us. Though good health couldn't be purchased, yet, healthy living has been maintained through the assistance of the modern world. Illnesses that could terminate lives can now be detected early without claiming souls.
Medicine and surgery has saved our mess. Conception could be made easily. The forgotten mothers now have a chance to hold a child of their own. More of a heartache though, but fathers can now uproot falsehood hidden about the paternity of their children. Science is of course a solution to mankind. Or do we look at what technology has introduced to us? Now we can take pride in AI. Isn't it part of what the modern world has equipped us with? The efficiencies, the real time processing and accuracy in data record. Even the deception can be tracked swiftly. Fraudsters are now apprehended easily. Tech bros can surely give testimony that they've been lifted off the street to a meaningful source of income.
How best do we manage our finances with the modern world? With our piggy banks not gone but replaced, we now have our cash in hundreds and thousands secured in shares and mutual funds. The long queues in financial institutions are now avoided by just a tap on a software on devices from comfort zones. The modern world celebrates beyond clarity, it embraces hard work and amplifies every little effort made.
The modern world definitely is not a fluke and yes, it has taken some priorities from some and entertains them with shenanigans. However, we are all the determinant of what it brings to us and what it chooses to ignore. We can simply be a partaker of the party we choose by how we implement it.
